The Marketing Or Musical Genius of Madonna

Posted on February 05, 2011
Abel Alexander asked:

Madonna holds the distinction of being the artist with the most number of reinvention. She has so more versions of herself than fifty of today’s young artists put together. It is such a difficult thing to analyze her because she doesn’t stay in one persona long enough for one to have enough understanding of what she is.

Madonna has portrayed an innocent tease, an educated nymphomaniac, an aware rebel, a glamorous beauty and passionate nymph. She has also represented so many cultures and so many issues such as *** rights. She has her own share of controversies as well. She was the very first artist to visually show a direct challenge on the conservative Catholics when she burned the symbol of the cross in one of her videos. I don’t think, however, that her greatness is about her music as much as it is about her ability to market herself. I have always maintained that musical greatness may be determined if you can strip an artist of everything and keep only the music, the timelessness, appeal and musicality will remain.

Madonna’s works don’t have that. She succinctly embellishes all her songs with controversial juices that it is almost impossible to get to know the core. On rare times when you are able to see through all those layers of shock and awe, what you hear is almost never as outstanding.

Her voice does not stand out. It doesn’t have the natural angst that haunts you the minute you hear the voice, even when you don’t know what they are saying. It doesn’t have the natural presence that dominates the room whenever her voice is heard. It doesn’t even have the flowing *** appeal that so many singers now posses that makes up for the lack of quality in their songs.

Her greats, Like A Virgin and Papa Don’t Preach were not remarkable musically. It didn’t introduce a new sound. It was a song you hear everyday. There was no new rifts, no new progression, no new accent on the sound. Those messages of the songs were, at best, rudimentary. It didn’t even inspired new artists to write think along the same lines.

This is not to say she should be any less respected. She did encourage women to be bolder in their life. She pioneered woman power and alpha female coolness. I just don’t’ think she deserves to be there with the musical greats. She is a marketing great, a marketing genius with unparalleled uniqueness. That is one category she can claim dominance on.

Respects for – Madonna

Posted on January 26, 2011
Patti Pacifico asked:

When I first met my husband, Larry, he said, “If Madonna was playing in my front yard, I would go out the back door and take a crap.” Needless to say, he did not go with me to Chicago, July 2004, to see her in concert. While I watched her, I told my friend, Suzie, “My soul aches to know I may never befriend her.”

Once in an interview, Madonna, talked about people that have been standing at her gate for twenty years, not listening to the lessons she was trying to get them to hear. These fans choose to disrupt her privacy and life, instead of appreciating and applying her experiences to theirs. I don’t want to be a person at the gate; rather my soul yearns to know what she knows and what must be expressed. I am comforted by her creativity and respect this individual that needs to know more and continue to grow.

As we returned from dinner one night, I played “Paradise Not For Me” by Madonna. Larry said, “My God, that was great who was it?” The weeks that followed, I played more songs and we watched videos from her Madonna Video Collection 93:99. By spring 2005, Larry’s Material Girl, sexually exploitive, irreverent opinion of Madonna was abolished. He is an advocate for her creativity, beauty of expression, individualistic talents and now says, “You know, Patti, people are going to look back on her and think, “what we were thinking, we should have listened when she was living.” She is amazing; everyone should pay attention to this girl.”

You don’t have to like her, understand her images or ideas, but you must listen and try to apply what you hear to your life and experiences. Like my Larry and Madonna, you too can change, grow and be better. Pay attention to this beautiful soul while we still have her.

Madonna Picture Discs

Posted on January 01, 2011
James M Dean asked:

Madonna’s next album release will be a Greatest Hits collection and it will be her last for current record company Warner Music.

Madonna signed to Sire Records (a division of warner) in 1982.

In 1991 her contract was renegotiated and ends this year(2009), after 27 years.

Madonna has signed a new 10 year deal with Live Nation.

During her time with Warners Madonna has released 21 albums (not including the new one) including three film soundtracks, two remix albums, two live albums, three compilations and 11 studio albums.

There has also been nearly eighty single releases, including re-releases.

A lot of Madonna music releases are collectables, especially the Picture Discs.

Madonna’s eleven studio albums are Madonna, Like A Virgin, True Blue, Like A Prayer, Erotica, Bedtime Stories, Ray Of Light, Music, American Life, Confessions On A Dancefloor and Hard Candy.

Compilations – The Immaculate Collection, GHV2 and Something To Remember.

Film Soundtracks – Who’s That Girl, I’m Breathless (from **** Tracy) and Evita.

Remix – You Can Dance and Remixed and Revisited.

Live Albums – I’m Going To Tell You A Secret and Confessions Live.

The only official picture disc releases are all Japanese releases of The First Album cat no p-15002, Like A Virgin cat no p-15003 and True Blue cat no p-15004. Japanese discs are more collectable and sell for a lot more money. They usually include obi strips and lyric and info sheets too.

There is also an official promo picture disc of You Can Dance catalog no PRO-MAD-1, which is very rare. This disc only has a picture on the b-side, the a-side is the track listing. There is also an unofficial release of this with a different cat no.

Unofficial Picture Disc releases are available of all highlighted albums listed above.

Picture Disc singles

Holiday, Borderline, Angel,Into The Groove, Crazy For You, Papa Don’t Preach, True Blue, Open Your Heart, La Isla Bonita, Who’s That Girl, Causing A Commotion, The Look Of Love, Like A Prayer, Express Yourself, Cherish, Dear Jessie, Hanky Panky, Vogue(2 versions 7″ and 12″), Justify My Love, Holiday(re-release), Crazy For You(re-release), Erotica, Deeper And Deeper, Fever Rain, Secret, Take A Bow, Music, Get Together, Jump, 4 Minutes, Give It To Me and Miles Away.

All the above singles are official releases including 7″, 12″ and shaped discs.

Erotica is the number 1 collectible picture disc of all the releases. One copy sold on ebay in 2007 for $7100. A fan in the Uk paid ?5000 for a copy.

This picture disc was withdrawn from sale because the artwork showed Madonna ******* Naomi Campbell’s toe around the same time the duchess of york was photographed ******* in the newspapers doing the same thing while having an affair. Due to the publicity the record company decided to withdraw the picture disc from sale and destroy them making it very rare. It’s rumored there are a couple of hundred in circulation mostly in the hands of collectors. A bootleg version is also available but nowhere near as valuable.

According to Madonnaunderground.com there are three main differences between the original and the bootleg these are:

1) The real “Erotica” picture disc carries a gold backing card, with the official “Madonna/Erotica” logo in the top-left corner. The bootleg disc is missing this backing card.

2) The real “Erotica” picture disc has a white rectangular box containing its catalog # directly below the Maverick logo on the vinyl itself. The bootleg disc is missing this box.

3) The real “Erotica” picture disc has the words “Orlake W0138TP” sketched on the run-out groove of the vinyl itself, on the inner loop. The bootleg disc is missing this writing.

To achieve the best price, picture discs need to be in mint or excellent condition (new or unplayed is even better). Some discs have stickers, or plinths included to stand your record on.If these are still included and in good condition all the better.

It’s not just picture discs that are collectible a lot of other records and CD’s are too, especially promotional copies, limited editions, white labels, different artwork and versions from other countries.

One of the best places to buy these picture discs as well as other collectibles is eBay. I have been seriously collecting for about 2 years and most of my collection has been purchased from here. There are also a few shops that specialize in Madonna collectibles.

If you have a record collection have a look through you just might have some hidden gems.

Madonna – Sticky & Sweet Tour CD-DVD

Posted on December 25, 2010
Tatiana Gunter asked:

For those who weren’t fortunate enough to catch Madonna’s latest Sticky & Sweet tour, you can now experience the thrill on the newly released Tour CD. Recorded in Buenos Aires two years ago, this long awaited album has seen the light of day. Plus those that want to see the concert can pop in the DVD for an extra experience.

While the CD contains 13 selections from the tour, the DVD contains the full concert of 26 different tracks. While there are tried and true versions of your favorite songs, some have been reinvented to bring them current for 2008.

Among those reinvented tunes are updated versions of Vogue, Music, La Isla Bonita, and Like a Prayer. Each has gone from their traditional arrangement to true dance numbers full of energy and pounding beats.

Over on the DVD there is a behind the scenes look of setting up the tour and auditioning for Madonna. This provides you with the insight on how much of a perfectionist this Icon really is. If you’ve ever wondered what really goes on behind the scenes of a big tour as well as the preparation it takes, this is the perfect chance for you to witness it.

As you watch the actual concert footage the camera men captured the perfect angles for each of the dance numbers, and you get a feeling like you are actually in the audience witnessing the concert. While most concert videos tend to be bland and focus on the face of the performer only, because a Madonna concert is a large experience beyond the songs.

One thing can certainly be said after watching and listening to this combo package for a woman who has been in the industry for almost three decades, she knows how to consistently reinvent herself with a relevance and style that anyone can appreciate. This package is the perfect testament to the direction she is going, and to the journey she has made so far.

Madonna – One of the Most Successful Female Artists

Posted on December 21, 2010
Elizabeth Claire asked:

It is almost hard to believe that Madonna is over 50 years old. As we still remember this new eccentric new singer in the early 1980′s with strange new looks and video clips like none other female singer had done before her.

I am sure some people even thought that the name Madonna was a completely fabricated name to sound more showbiz. However, Madonna is the real first name of Madonna Ciccone born to an Italian father and a French Canadian mother whose first name was also Madonna.

Madonna’s mother died when she was only 5 years old and the singer has admitted during several interviews that her mother’s death affected her deeply and was the reason of some of her behaviors and overall personality.

She felt abandoned and weak and was determined to be strong. She said that this was the drive of her success as one of the most successful singer of all times.

Madonna is the top-selling rock music female with over 300 million records sold worldwide and 64 million albums in the United States. She is the second 2nd best female overall record selling of the 20th century only after Barbara Streisand.

During the 1980′s and the first half of the 1990′s no other female singers could even remotely reach the kind of success, fame and popularity that Madonna had reached.

Madonna who has revealed herself that she had been influenced by Marilyn Monroe, which was evident in the music video “Material Girl”, is definitely bearing some kind or resemblance with her down to the neck blond hair, fair skin and red lips.

Curiously the loss of her mother at a very young age was also a similitude between Madonna and Monroe having to grow up without a mother.

Like Monroe, Madonna has also found herself in the middle of several controversies because of her provoking videos and films. In the end, however, Madonna has always come out victorious, continuing to sell albums by the millions.

Even though Madonna has been somewhat quieter in recent years, she is far from retired and has recorded her third live album earlier this year and has a film project as a director of a movie about the affair of King Edward VII and Wallis Simpson.

Yes, beside her eccentricity and a few scandals that have sparkle her career, Madonna is also a talented artist who can sing, dance, act and direct films. All with obvious talent and ease.

Is Lady Gaga The New Madonna?

Posted on November 03, 2010
Keith Clean asked:

Lady GaGa is not only a trendsetter in today’s pop music but in fashion as well. Last year she was the favorite subject for many Italian and French designers during their fashion shows. But she is not only loved by the designers in the fashion industry, other celebrities are also going GaGa for the Lady.

The answer to the question we all want to know is “What inspires her?”, she answers: “I am inspired by all sorts of things mostly New York City which is where I am from.” “I am inspired by photography and art and I like to go to museums.” She than pauses and says “And yes, Madonna of course!”

In 2010 Madonna wasn’t the biggest singer or entertainer but we can’t forget the influence she has had on nowadays pop music and pop culture. Madonna was known for being a strong and extremely dominant performer who did what whatever she wanted to do, without thinking about what the critics would write about her in the tabloids.

In the 80s and early 90s Madonna was the ultimate entertainer. She could sing and dance like the best but also had a great sense of fashion and wasn’t to shy to showcase it. Many teenage girls followed the trends that she started by buying gloves, Ray Ban sunglasses and pearl necklaces.

She was also revolutionary, singing about topics no other female in that time dared to sing about. It can be said that Madonna made it okay for females to be as sexual as they wanted to be.

Does this remind you of any one today?

Lady Gaga of course. Remember last year’s performance at the MTV music awards where she sang the song “Paparazzi” and ended it by pretending to hang herself, while she was drenched in blood? Everybody was furious.

Madonna sort of did this already in 1984. She was then dressed up in a wedding dress and sang the song ” Like a Virgin” and crawled around the stage like a ***** bride who was couldn’t wait for her honeymoon to begin. Everybody was furious.

One thing is for sure, nobody ever forgot the Madonna performance nor will they forget Lady Gaga’s performance last year at the MTV Music awards.

I certainly think that Lady Gaga is the Madonna of the twenty-first century. But my point is: if there never had been a Madonna, Lady Gaga probably never would have existed today. Madonna did some very great things, which never should be forgotten. It also must be said that Lady Gaga is extremely talented, nevertheless she got “lucky” Madonna already carved the pad out that lies ahead of her.

To summarize this article: The teens nowadays need to appreciate their elders and Lady Gaga has a good chance to become our modern day Madonna.

The Importance Of Women In Art

Posted on October 30, 2010
Donovan Gauvreau asked:

In the history of mankind, women have always been an interesting model for art, from stone carvings to canvas paintings. They have been the focus of some of the world’s most important masterpieces. While it is essential to acknowledge all the great pieces of artistic expression displaying the female form, some deserve exclusivity for their uniqueness, and some artists merit kudos for their awareness of the importance of women in art.

Leonardo da Vinci

Homage must be paid to the great artist Leonardo da Vinci, who was born during a time when women were far from being on equal ground with men, and yet, he frequently chose women as models and presented them under a favorable light in his art work. To say that he intentionally supported the plight of women would be a stretch, but when one contemplates his art, one can presume that women were a subject of significant interest to him, and that he thought their essence and beauty to be worthwhile capturing with his brush strokes.

Mona Lisa

The list of spectacular and awe-inspiring works of art, using women as the main, subject, includes Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. The haunting portrait is not only a display of striking physical female beauty, but also a show of remarkable understanding, on the artist’s part, of the inner wisdom of women, their subtle charm and seductive nature. For centuries, her mysterious smile has been studied by art critics, only to remain an enigma to this day.

The Last Supper – Mary Magdalen

There is an ongoing debate as to whether the person sitting to the right of Jesus in Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece The Last Supper is indeed Mary Magdalen. The assumption that her role amongst Christ’s disciples merited a place in this famous masterpiece is valid ground to believe that women in art had a major impact in classical art, as well as in the modern art forms today.

The Many Faces of The Madonna

There are countless famous and popular examples of women as subjects in art work. The sheer number of images of the Madonna, sculpted, painted, or otherwise, is impressive. With or without child, she is a symbol of not only spirituality and faith, but also maternal love. Although the Madonna is most often associated with religion, she is also considered a universal ‘mother’ icon. To the non-religious, observer, Madonnas are viewed on a more simplistic level. Beauty, grace, and love artfully expressed through the delicate female form.
A few well-known classic Madonnas are listed below:

‘Madonna of the Sunset’ – wall painting by Italian artist Pietro Lorenzetti (1280-1348)The Madonna of the Magnificat’ – painting by Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510)’The Madonna of the Goldfinch’ – one of many small Madonnas by Raphael (1483-1520)’Madonna’ – painting by Spanish artist Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1618-1682)

Some modern Madonna images include:

‘Madonna of the Lilies’ – paper giclee by French artist William Bouguereau (1825-1905)’Modern Madonna and Child’ (1922) – painting by J.C. Leyendecker (1874-1951)’Madonna and Child’ – painting by Kristin Llamas (1982- )’Black Madonna’ – relief sculpture by Nigerian artist Chidi Okoye

From Then to Now

Images of women in art date back to prehistoric times, when female forms representing fertility were carved in stone or painted on walls. To this day, artists still attempt to capture the essence of women, **** or attired, melancholic or joyous, innocent or seductive, by transposing their perception of the female gender into their art. So how important is the role of women in art? Very important!

Astrologers Viewpoint of Madonna’s Astrology Chart

Posted on October 23, 2010
Donna Page asked:

Madonna is in the news again over the adoption of a child in Malawi. She is receiving criticism that the reason she has been approved is because of her celebrity status and money. Local human rights groups suggest that the adoption is akin to human trafficking and Save The Children has accused the star of staging a puppy parade.

As an astrologer this is fascinating, why is it that someone who has donated millions of dollars and is supporting an orphanage at the brunt of so much criticism? The answer is in her chart.

Madonna has 4 planets in her twelfth house, this is considered a very bad placement and indicates suffering, whether self imposed or from circumstances you become the victim of. The way around the twelfth house suffering is through service towards others.

In a nut shell her chart indicates that in order to find fulfillment in life she will need to be needed. Finding a way to serve and help others who are less fortunate is her ticket out of suffering and into a fulfilled life. There is a strong spiritual pull and direction that her higher self or soul is requesting of her. She has heeded the call with her quest into the Kabala.

Madonna’s ruler of her fifth house of children is Saturn in Sagittarius (symbol of foreign countries) in the forth house. This signature symbolizes children from a foreign country, and also the forth house is the house of home and family. Her destiny is to reside in a foreign country and would have been predicted from birth. It is part of her path to live overseas and that her children would be connected somehow with another country. Transiting Saturn is squaring her Saturn, triggering issues around her home and children, all will be settled and resolved by mid July when Saturn again crosses over that point.

Neptune is opposing her Sun, her spirit is seeking the ideal, this is a very creative influence if used properly, if not it can indicate that there is something that she is not seeing clearly or that someone has not been totally up front and honest with her. Coupled with an influence that is happening with her money planet she needs to be careful not to be deceived in a business deal. This influence began May 2008 and will continue until November 2009.

Pluto is squaring Madonna’s progressed Venus, death and rebirth in her relationships is this transits influence. Pluto Venus also indicates the desire to bring into her life more of what is important to her and what she loves. Her relationships will be undergoing change in 2010. Jupiter is favoring Madonna in 2009 and she will be able to have something that she longs for.

Madonna’s chart indicates that she lost children in a prior life to a tragic death, and that there is a fear of losing her children this life. An astrologer would say that her need to save children stems from this prior life. Her support of the orphanage in Malawi and her adoption of children are fulfilling a need and heartfelt pain that she incarnated with in this lifetime. Indeed the fact that she is famous and financially successful was the necessary step to fulfill a greater mission.

Her spirit incarnated with the desire and passion to never be in a position where she would lose her child to starvation and poverty and evil, (as in her last life) and that she would be powerful enough to be able to save them. My interpretation of her chart is that as she was dying is her previous incarnation her emotional body was filled with so much heartbreak, angst, and pain over seeing her children starved and murdered that the power of that emotion led her on the path of fame and fortune to be in a position to avenge her grief.
