The Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, CA – See it to Believe it
Posted on December 24, 2010Greg Cryns asked:
This famous hotel at the south end of the city of San Luis Obispo need to be experienced. It is difficult to explain what you will find there when you visit. To call it “flamboyant” is an understatement.
When I bring my friends to the Madonna Inn I always walk through the coffee shop first. That way I can tell them to take a look at the bathroom facilities. I saw the men’s room and it is a hoot. For example, there you will find waterfall urinals and an old fashioned hand pump to push up the water when you wash your hands.
Alex and Phyllis Madonna completed the hotel in 1958. The hotel’s exterior has a Swiss Alp look. In 1966 the Inn burned to the grown but re-opened one year later. The new version has 109 rooms. Alex Madonna was quoted in the New York Times in 1982: “I want people to come in with a smail and leave with a smile. It’s fun. What fun do you think John Paul Getty got out of his life?
Anybody can build one room and a thousand like it.” Alex never got around to building a swimming pool at the Inn. He said that the guests would go into the hotel after swimming and get the carpets wet. But after Alex died Phyllis and daughter Connie Pearce, the hotel manager, decided to put in a swimming pool.
Each guest room in the hotel unique. Care to rent the Caveman Room? You can but you may have to wait six months or longer for an opening. Does the Love Nest fit your fancy (or fantasy)? Some other rooms are titled “Antique Car” “Captain’s Bridge” “China Flower” “Fabulous Fifties” “Holland Dutch” “Matterhorn” “Old Mexico” “Oriental Fantasy” to name a few. I especially want to learn what this room looks like – “What’s Left.”
The main rooms of the Inn include the wine cellar, gourmet shop, coffee shop (Copper Cafe and Coffee Bar) and bakery, a cocktail lounge, banquet rooms, gift shops for men and women and an extraordinary dining room that you need to visit around Christmas time to experience a beautiful and startling decorating effect.
Throughout the Madonna Inn you will see leaded glass work. The coffee shop sports huge etched glass windows that you seldom see anymore. Hundreds of hand wood carvings are scattered throughout the Inn.
The exotic guest rooms come with a long list of amenities including a complimentary local newspaper, flat screen TV, clock radio with MP3 plug-in, hair dryer, in-room safe, iron and ironing board along with the many other items we’ve grown accustomed to having at high class hotels and resorts.
Whether you are a tourist, a local resident or a newlywed looking for a fantastic place to honeymoon, you need to visit the Madonna Inn.
